Mississippi Pet Insurance FAQs
What is pet insurance?
If you have a dog or a cat, you know they are prone to getting into trouble every once in a while. The modern world is shaped around human convenience, but it often forces your pet to face situations that it is not naturally equipped to handle. Really, pet insurance works pretty much the same as our medical insurance. Pet insurance can help you pay the vet bills if your loyal companion gets sick or hurt. This will vary depending on what provider you choose and what amount of coverage you purchase. For this reason, you should compare different plans before making a final decision to get the pet insurance that best fits your needs.
Do I really need pet insurance in Mississippi?
We believe that pet insurance is essential no matter where you live. Each part of the United States poses its own dangers to your pets, but the truth is that many medical issues are not caused by the environment where you live. Other age-related health complications and diseases are out there that can cost a lot of money to treat. Furthermore, cats and dogs each have plenty of genetic factors that can lead them to develop a severe health condition.
How do I sign up for pet insurance?
Signing up for pet insurance is easy if you know what you are looking for! Your first step is to do some research. Each insurance company will offer slightly different coverages, so you need to compare them and decide which policy is best for you. Once you decide on an insurance carrier, your next step is to contact them and sign an agreement. In most cases, you can immediately make your first premium payment, and your insurance begins the same day!
How does insurance claim compensation work?
For most insurance companies, claim compensation works the same way. Upon receiving your vet bill, you will need to pay it out of pocket. After you have paid it, you will file a claim to request compensation from your insurance provider. They will review your claim, and if it falls under your policy agreement, they will compensate you accordingly. Keep in mind that you must remain up-to-date on your monthly premiums to keep your policy from lapsing! If your insurance policy has expired, you are not going to be compensated.
Trupanion offers an exception to the standard claim compensation system. If you use a veterinarian in their network, they will pay your vet bill directly. This means that their customers do not have to pay out-of-pocket vet bills unless their policy agreement covers them.
How does insurance reimbursement work?
Let’s say that your pet insurance policy entitles you to a 90% reimbursement amount, a $250 deductible, and a $20,000 max annual benefit. You must take your furry friend to the emergency vet for whatever reason! The skilled veterinarians there work hard and save your pet’s life. Unfortunately, this type of expertise doesn’t come cheap, and your vet bill is $10,000. So you file a claim with your pet insurance company. Because you have up-to-date insurance, your insurance provider reimburses you for $9,000, minus your $250 deductible. For this reason, you only paid $1,250 for this operation instead of the $10,000 an uninsured pet owner would have had to pay. The value of pet insurance speaks for itself!
What types of vet bills does pet insurance cover?
With most insurance providers, you can expect coverage for any vet visit where the treatment is for anything considered “sudden and catastrophic.” This could be broken bones, lacerations, allergic reactions, or, if you have a dog, it may even be something like accidentally swallowing a toy! Furthermore, most companies also offer “wellness packages.” These cover more routine care, such as regular vet visits, vaccinations, heartworm medication, and more.
Keep in mind that insurance companies nearly always decline to cover preexisting conditions. So if your animal companion is already being treated for an ailment when you sign up for insurance, the insurance provider will typically refuse to pay for it. This is because insurance is for things that may happen, and these companies would not make money if you only signed up after something was wrong with your pet.
5 Important Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe and Healthy in Mississippi
We have already established that the best protection for your furry friends is to purchase pet insurance. However, the goal is to avoid harm befalling our pets in the first place, when possible. With that in mind, here are five important tips for keeping your pet safe and healthy in Mississippi!
1. Get regular veterinarian check-ups
If you own a cat, you know they are rarely looking forward to the vet. Nobody likes to be poked and prodded! On the other hand, if you own a dog, perhaps it does enjoy the vet. Regardless, many people don’t go to the vet regularly because they don’t see the importance of routine examinations on their pets. Veterinarians are excellent at detecting medical conditions in the early stages. Therefore, regular visits may save your animal companion from something much worse!
2. Be conscious of the wildlife
The state of Mississippi has numerous hazards that can place your cat or dog in extreme danger. Obviously, our domestic companions are not equipped to protect themselves against black bears, rattlesnakes, alligators, or panthers! That being said, it is crucial to be mindful of where your pet is at all times. If your pet lives outdoors, we advise keeping it in an enclosure to avoid it wandering off and getting seriously injured or killed.
3. Keep your pets hydrated!
Hydration is vital for dogs and cats alike. Unfortunately, our pets are often unable to let us know when their water bowls are empty. They certainly can’t warn us when they are experiencing the early stages of heat-related illness! To further reduce the risk of your pet suffering from heat-related illness, you should minimize their time in the sun on hot days. If that isn’t possible, it is vital to check on them to do okay regularly. If you notice any abnormal behavior at all, take them to the vet immediately!
4. Make sure your house is pet-friendly
Keeping your house pet-friendly can serve as an excellent way to reduce the risk of injury to your pets. There are numerous commonplace items that dogs and cats do not understand and thus can shock, choke, or cut themselves with them by mistake. Furthermore, if you have multiple pets, it is important to be sure that they are getting along before leaving them alone with each other for an extended time.
5. Watch the weather
Weather concerns in Mississippi can potentially cause significant harm to your cat or dog. The high winds, severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes tend to be a danger year-round. If you find yourself in a position where you must evacuate your residence, please ensure that you take your pet with you if it is safe to retrieve them. An animal trapped in the home under these conditions is very likely to be seriously injured or killed.

The first line of their mission statement says it all; “We are here to help animals in need.”
5. Mississippi Critterz – Oxford, MS
