Kansas Dog Insurance FAQs

What is dog insurance?

Dog insurance is best explained by comparing it to our health insurance. Suppose your dog has a medical issue of any kind. In that case, you can expect it to be at least partially covered by your dog insurance company, assuming it is not a pre-existing condition prior to you purchasing the insurance policy. Essentially, dog insurance is medical insurance for your pet. Like with our insurance, the amount of coverage will depend on the specific policy agreement and the type of medical problem requiring treatment. Therefore, according to their policy language, it is important to compare insurance providers carefully to understand what is covered and what is not.

How do I sign up for dog insurance, and how does compensation work?

Signing up for dog insurance is relatively simple if you keep a few things in mind. First, you will want to compare policies and decide which company offers you the best care for your pup within your price range. It may also be helpful to check out some reviews or get recommendations for good dog insurance companies. Once you choose a provider, you will sign an agreement and begin paying a monthly premium. It is vital to stay up-to-date on your monthly payments to ensure that your policy doesn’t lapse.

Most dog insurance companies will have you pay the vet bill out of pocket. Receiving compensation is as easy as filing an insurance claim and sending it to your pet insurance provider. If your policy is current on premium payments, you will be compensated per your policy agreement.

At what age is my puppy eligible for puppy insurance? What about dog insurance?

Most insurance companies require your puppy to apply for puppy insurance at least eight weeks of age. Because of the health risks a dog faces this early in life, we highly recommend buying a puppy insurance policy as soon as your pup becomes eligible.

Dog insurance, however, does not have a specific age requirement. Therefore, we recommend purchasing dog insurance as soon as possible. Insurance tends to be less expensive when your dog is younger because your pet isn’t as likely to face age-related health issues. Furthermore, although insurance companies cover new health problems, many have policy language protecting them from compensating policy-holders based on pre-existing conditions. For this reason, we recommend purchasing dog insurance before your dog’s first birthday, if not sooner.

Do I need dog insurance in Kansas?

Every dog owner should purchase insurance for their canine, regardless of location. No state poses the same risks to pets, but each state has its dangers, and Kansas is no exception. Additionally, remember that many health issues and emergencies your dog will face have nothing to do with your location.

Is dog insurance worth the cost?

Dog insurance is worth the monthly cost. Depending on what happens to your pup, even a small operation can cost much more than expected. Furthermore, any serious injury or illness can easily result in thousands of dollars of vet bills from a life-saving surgery or treatment. Having up-to-date dog insurance could one day make the difference between saving your pet and having to euthanize it due to an inability to pay.

What types of vet bills are covered by dog insurance?

The types of vet bills covered by dog insurance vary depending on the insurance provider. However, most insurance companies offer coverage for anything considered “sudden and catastrophic,” which could be anything from broken bones, infections, or allergic reactions to something as simple as your dog accidentally swallowing something indigestible, like a ball or a small household item.

As mentioned previously, insurance companies usually decline to cover pre-existing conditions. Any health issue that your dog had been diagnosed with or treated for before signing up for insurance won’t be covered. Buying dog insurance early on is important before any health conditions develop. If your loyal companion is already sick, you are late and that specific condition will be excluded but other conditions not previously know about or diagnosed will still most likely be covered.

Most dog insurance providers offer “wellness” packages, which help cover regular care, such as heartworm medication, routine exams, and vaccines. These insurance packages vary by provider, so check and see what your dog insurance company offers.

What is an example of insurance reimbursement?

One example of insurance reimbursement is as follows:

Your dog has some accident, and you rush to the emergency vet. This is your pup’s first accident in 3 years, and you have maintained pet insurance. You know that your current dog insurance policy offers a 90% reimbursement amount, with a $250 deductible and a $20,000 max annual benefit. After treating your dog and saving its life, the vet charges you $10,000. You file your claim with the insurance company, which reimburses you for $9,000 minus your $250 deductible. Because you have current dog insurance, you are now only paying $1,250 out of pocket instead of $10,000. In this scenario, dog insurance has saved you a massive amount of money, much more than what you have paid in monthly premiums to date.

One company that offers an exception to the rule of paying out-of-pocket and being reimbursed later is Trupanion, which will send payment directly to veterinarians in their network.

Is it better to have a lower deductible or a lower monthly premium?

The answer to this question depends on you. A lower deductible will result in higher monthly premium costs, meaning you are paying more money each month in premiums but will pay less out of pocket when your dog goes to the vet. Lower monthly premium payments will, of course, result in a higher deductible. Ultimately, the choice is yours. The best course of action is to assess your financial situation and decide if higher monthly payments are worth paying significantly less out of pocket in an emergency.

Most insurance providers offer a user-friendly online calculator to help you compare the differences in monthly premium payments and deductibles. In our experience, most dog owners choose a $250 or $500 deductible.

Do homeowners insurance companies have a restricted breeds list?

Homeowner’s insurance is different in each state, but most insurance companies have restrictions on specific dog breeds. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Akitas
  • Chow Chows
  • Doberman Pinschers
  • German Shepherds
  • Bull Mastiffs
  • Pit Bull Terriers
  • Rottweilers
  • Wolfhounds

If you have questions regarding restricted breeds in your area, it is essential to contact your local home insurance provider and ask for their restricted breeds list. You may need a specific liability rider if your dog is a restricted breed.

5 Useful Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe & Healthy in Kansas

We believe that the best way to keep your dog safe and healthy is to invest in dog insurance because some illnesses and injuries are inevitable. In unavoidable circumstances, dog insurance guarantees that you can afford to return your pup to good health. However, there are a few things you can focus on to prevent some trips to the vet. Below are five useful tips for keeping your dog safe and healthy in Kansas:

1. Get regular vet check-ups

One of the best ways to keep your dog safe and healthy is to bring your dog in for regular vet appointments. Keep in mind that many severe health conditions can be mitigated or prevented entirely by early detection. A good veterinarian will be able to discover some illnesses or health complications and begin treating them long before they become serious threats to your pup.

2. Be mindful of the treats you give

Giving a dog treats is something that most dog owners find relatable. We love rewarding our loyal companions for good behavior, performing tricks, or simply being themselves! However, you must be mindful of what type of treats you give your dog, mainly if it is something off of your plate. Some foods that are normal to us are poisonous to dogs. Do the proper research before giving your pet any food you aren’t sure they are allowed to eat. This can save you both a trip to the vet and potentially save your dog’s life.

3. Know your local wildlife

Among the most loved qualities about dogs is their determination to protect their owners from harm. While this is a positive trait, it can put your pup in extreme danger. Plenty of animal predators exist in every state, and Kansas is no exception. It only takes a few seconds for your dog to be seriously injured or killed while mistakenly believing it protects you from harm. Because of this, you should always know where your dog is and be sure that it is not allowed to roam freely outdoors when you aren’t there as well.

4. Train your dog properly

Another way to keep your dog safe is to teach it basic commands and discipline. A dog’s instincts don’t give it a fighting chance against technology today. You need your dog to come when you call, without fail. This can protect your dog from minor traffic incidents, animal attacks, and worse. A well-trained dog is more likely to escape serious injury or death than a dog who refuses to listen.

5. Don’t forget to hydrate!

Proper hydration is vital for keeping your dog healthy. Drinking plenty of water is an effective defense for dogs against a host of sicknesses and other health issues. In addition, a canine who is dehydrated has a much higher risk of overheating. So watch for warning signs that your pup is experiencing a heat-related illness, and if you notice a behavior change, take your pet to veterinary professionals immediately.

5 Unique Kansas Dog Rescues

We highly recommend rescuing a dog if you want to add a new furry friend to your family. Many pups out there have so much love to give and yet nowhere to go. If you do decide to adopt a dog from a shelter, here are five unique dog rescues that we highly recommend:

K-9 Karma is a non-profit all-volunteer rescue that serves the Wichita area. Their user-friendly page offers simple navigation options to make their site accessible to everyone. One thing we love about K-9 Karma is that they accept all breeds of dogs at their rescue.

2. Unleashed Pet Rescue – Mission, KS

Located in Mission, Kansas, Unleashed Pet Rescue is a licensed non-profit animal shelter founded in 2011. They are a no-kill rescue and work daily with local high-kill shelters to rescue dogs facing almost certain death! Unleashed Pet Rescue receives no state or federal funding, and they rely entirely on donations.

3. Allen County Animal Rescue Facility – LaHarpe, KS

With a mission to “provide a safe and loving haven for those cats and dogs in our community who are lost, abandoned, or unwanted,” Allen County Animal Rescue Facility is an excellent choice for locals to adopt their next dog. While they do have contracts to take in impounded animals, they also accept many animals that their owners simply surrender.

4. T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter – Manhattan, KS

The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter provides service to Riley County, Pottawatomie County, and the City of Manhattan. Their mission statement includes “…sheltering of unwanted companion animals, providing public education on the care of companion animals, and promoting humane treatment and responsible pet ownership”.

5. Beauty and Beasts, Inc. – Wichita, KS

Self-described as a “death row rescue,” Beauty and Beasts of Wichita, KS, has a focus on rescuing animals from high-kill shelters that may be on the brink of euthanization. According to their website, they do not discriminate against age, breed, medical issues, or behavior – they love them all the same!
