Washington Pet Insurance FAQs

In Washington, how much will pet insurance cost me?

Your average monthly payment will be around $25 for a kitten and $30 for an adult for an average domestic shorthair cat’s basic insurance plan. For a large cat’s basic insurance plan, like the larger breed Maine Coon, the average will be around $30 for a kitten and $35 for an adult.

For a small dog’s basic insurance plan, your average monthly payment will be around $30 for a puppy and $40 for an adult. For a large dog’s basic insurance plan, the average will be around $60 for a puppy and $70 for an adult.

By location, Seattle, WA seems to have higher monthly rates on average for pet insurance than areas like Spokane and Olympia.

As a Washington pet owner, is it worth insuring my pet?

It may feel like the average day in your life as a pet owner can be a little chaotic, but it can never compare to the emotional state a pet emergency can bring.

The unfortunate reality for many pet owners is that they cannot recover from an unexpected veterinary emergency. A surprise vet visit can sometimes be too much for some pet owners to pay, meaning that they have to resort to signing off on the euthanization of their pet simply because they couldn’t afford to pay the vet bill. Pet insurance plans seek to be the buffer that keeps us as pet owners from making that choice, thereby reducing much of the emotional burden an emergency brings.

What does pet insurance cover?

When you think of pet insurance, you can mainly think of emergencies. Most pet insurance plans cover expenses from vet visits related to broken bones, infections, surprise surgeries, broken bones, and other similar medical emergencies. Thus, your pet insurance likely will not cover any standard vet expenses like wellness visits and checkups, spay/neuter procedures, and vaccinations. Further, pet insurance does not usually cover if your pet has some sort of pre-existing health condition.

Your pet insurance provider may offer purchasable add-ons to your basic pet insurance plan that could cover some of those everyday expenses.

How does pet insurance work? How do I use it?

Typically, you cannot use your pet insurance–in other words, you cannot submit a claim to your pet insurance company–until your company’s waiting period has ended. This waiting period can last for about two weeks or more after you have purchased your insurance plan, so any expenses that happen during this time will still be up to you to pay.

However once this waiting period is up, you can submit a claim to your insurance company in the case of a veterinary emergency. After you’ve paid your deductible, your insurance company will then provide your “reimbursement rate”, which is typically around 80% of the vet expense.

Which is better, a high or low deductible?

When deciding between a high deductible plan or a low deductible plan, we suggest analyzing your current financial situation and what will be most affordable for you in the foreseeable future.

If you purchase a pet insurance plan with a high deductible, you will be paying less each month but paying more in the case of a veterinary emergency. Contrarily, if you purchase a plan with a low deductible, you will pay a bit more per month to pay less when your pet has an emergency.

Check out your insurance company’s website to see if they provide an easy-to-use quote calculator to help you decide between a high or low deductible.

How old does my pet need to be for me to get them insurance?

While each insurance company varies, they usually require that a kitten be at least 8 months of age before you can get them covered by an insurance plan. Additionally, puppies typically must be between 6 and 8 weeks old before they can be covered. We highly recommend, if you can, to get your pet covered before their first birthday. Purchasing an insurance plan for your pet when they are still a “baby” is normally cheaper than buying a plan for an adult animal, whatever the species.

How do I know which vet will take my pet insurance?

The neat thing about pet insurance is that you are not limited in which vet you can take your pet insurance to because there is never any interaction between your vet and your insurance company. Therefore, you are free to pick whichever local vet you would like.

5 Useful Strategies for Keeping Your Pet Safe & Healthy in Washington

We all want to see our pets at their happiest and healthiest–rolling around, chasing their tails, and doing whatever other quirks they do best! Here are 5 tips and strategies for helping your pet stay safe and healthy in Washington:

1. Safety is Key

More than most states in the US, Washington is especially prone to landslides and has been known to experience other major natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and earthquakes. We recommend staying up to date on Washington’s safety and emergency procedures so that you can put together a safety and evacuation plan for you and your pets.

2. Outdoor Shelter is Crucial

Wolves and coyotes, among others, like to claim Washington land for themselves, so if you have outdoor pets, we suggest providing them with appropriate outdoor shelter and fencing to deter these predators, especially if you have pets that are smaller like cats and small dogs.

3. Bring Pets in at Night

While it was recorded nearly 50 years ago, Washington’s coldest winter reached a whopping 48 degrees below zero. Though current-day Washington’s winters are more modest, it’s always a good idea to provide outdoor pets, or even indoor pets who simply visit outdoors, areas to get in from the cold particularly at night.

4. Never Leave Your Dog or Cat in a Hot Car

Summers in Washington aren’t nearly the hottest in the United States, but even in just 80-degree weather, the inside of a car can easily exceed 95 degrees when left in the sun, so we advise never leaving a pet unattended inside a vehicle.

5. Collar and Chip your Pet

Animal shelters all across the nation help owners of lost animals put up “Missing” and “Lost” signs every day, even by using their social media. To minimize the likelihood of your pet going missing and not finding them, make sure their collar has updated tags with your contact information. Additionally, you can consider getting your pet microchipped as a double safety measure in case your pet’s collar also goes missing.

5 Unique Pet Rescue Shelters in Washington

Maybe you grew up in a family that always went to the pet store to buy a new pet.
Maybe, instead, your family was a strictly, “Adopt, Don’t Shop” kind of family.

Whatever you are used to, we want to suggest you open your eyes, and heart, to the idea of bringing your new family member home from one of these 5 unique Washington animal shelters. Shelters save so many animal lives every year and they couldn’t do their hard work without every one of their brave volunteers.

1. Humane Society for Southwest Washington in Vancouver, WA

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington has been caring for the animals of its surrounding communities since 1897. With primary values including companionship, teamwork, and education, this shelter serves with excellence the many canines, felines, and even bunnies who need help finding their forever homes!

2. Homeward Pet Adoption Center in Woodinville, WA

Since 1990, the Homeward Pet Adoption Center has operated by its founding belief that all adoptable animals will one day find safe, loving, forever homes. After much success with their Dog Behavior Team, the shelter also started a Cat Behavior Team in 2016, thus increasing the chances that these dogs and cats will be adopted.

3. Humane Society of Skagit Valley in Burlington, WA

Founded in 1974 with a big heart for hurting, abandoned, and unwanted companion animals, the Humane Society of Skagit Valley cares for over 2,500 animals annually. This shelter’s education efforts include their Barn Buddy Program, which encourages people who have the appropriate space to adopt cats who would otherwise not find a home.

4. Whatcom Humane Society in Bellingham, WA

Having operated by the three principles of kindness, respect, and compassion since 1902, the Whatcom Humane Society treats over 4,000 animals annually. The shelter’s patients range from cats and dogs to birds and bunnies, making this shelter a prime spot to visit if your family is looking to adopt a very special animal indeed!

5. Burien C.A.R.E.S. in Burien, WA

Proud owners of Burien’s first doggy daycare, the Burien C.A.R.E.S. shelter has provided a plethora of services centered around educating the people and caring for the animals in Burien, King County, and Washington State since 2011.

Conclusion

No matter the species of your new animal family member, we know that bringing your fur-ever friend home can be an exciting and sometimes intimidating journey. And though pets come with their list of expenses, we hope you can see the value in adding pet insurance to the things you are willing to do–and buy–to keep them safe and happy. Having pet insurance when an emergency strikes could mean the difference between preserving the life of your pet and an unnecessary euthanization because the expense was too great. Think through your current financial situation before deciding on your pet insurance plan and consider getting your pet covered before their first birthday.

Through our extensive research, we found that Lemonade consistently performed the best with the lowest monthly premiums.
