Texas Pet Insurance FAQs

What is pet insurance?

Like human health insurance, pet insurance is medical coverage when a dog or cat is ill or injured (some policies cover reptiles and exotic pets, too). Typically you can get a pet insurance plan that will cover accidents only, or you can find a policy that insures accidents and illnesses. Unlike human insurance, though, there are no networks and you can go to any licensed veterinarian.

What is covered? Are there exclusions to pet insurance?

Exact terms of a policy obviously vary between providers but in general, things like broken bones, digestive issues, prescription medications, diagnostic testing, heart conditions, cancer, and surgery are covered. Services that would be considered preventative in nature, like routine dental exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter procedures, aren’t usually covered under an injury or sickness plan. Still, some providers offer a separate wellness plan to help with these costs.

No pet insurance will cover pre-existing conditions, which are medical issues your pet is already experiencing prior to purchasing a policy, or that occur during the waiting period. For most plans there is a waiting period of 2-15 days after you buy the policy until you can use the insurance.

How does pet insurance work?

Once you purchase a pet insurance policy you are able to begin using it after the waiting period. All plans will have a deductible so you will need to pay out of pocket until you reach that amount. Then you can submit claims for reimbursement; it’s often as easy as snapping a picture of an invoice and sending it to an app. Most pet insurance providers will have several plan options to choose from – reimbursement options ranging from 70-90% and a maximum annual limit. The lower the deductible that you choose, the higher your monthly premium will be. Likewise, the more you want reimbursed from the vet bill, the higher the monthly rate. If you want to keep things affordable, pay attention to the annual reimbursement level, which is the maximum amount the policy will reimburse you in a year, because as that climbs, so do your premiums.

Will my dog breed be covered?

Pet insurance does not exclude certain breeds of dogs. What may be impacted if you own a dog is your homeowner’s insurance. Some providers maintain a list of prohibited dog breeds where they will not provide homeowners insurance, or the policy will exclude coverage for anything related to dog bites. It’s important to review your homeowner’s insurance plan to see if there are any exclusions.

Can I get pet insurance for my older cat?

Yes and no. Most of the pet insurance plans we reviewed offered coverage for dogs and cats into their senior years but several would not insure dogs over 14 years of age and cats over 15. All pet insurance requires a puppy to be at least 8 weeks old and usually 6 weeks for kittens. The older a pet is, the more expensive the monthly premium becomes as there are typically more medical issues as pets age.

5 Ways to Keep Your Pets Safe and Healthy in Texas

1. Keep Fresh Water Available Always

For dog owners near the Gulf Coast, salt toxicity is a real concern in summer months. Unlike humans, dogs do not recognize the difference between freshwater and saltwater. While they are playing fetch with you on the beach, their mouths are scooping up plenty of water that contains a lot of salt. When sodium levels become high, vomiting and diarrhea may start followed by neurological issues. It is imperative to keep fresh water available for your dog, and if you feel they have ingested too much saltwater, take them to the nearest emergency vet hospital.

2. Use Ice Cubes On Hot Days

Cool water should always be available for dogs, cats, and any livestock with the hot Texas sun. Horses and donkeys can drink 10-20 gallons of water per day. Keep the water in a bowl that will not tip over and try not to use metal bowls outside where they can heat up quickly. If you’re using a hose to fill a bowl (or right into your pet’s mouth!), be sure to let the water run for a few minutes so it doesn’t burn them. For a treat, throw some ice cubes into the water bowl, too, if you’re going to be around to monitor your pet crunching on them.

3. Secure Fences

Did you know that more pets tend to go missing over the Fourth of July holiday than any other time of the year? We do like to celebrate Independence Day here in the Lone Star State but fireworks and other loud noises may frighten your pets and cause them to run out of the house or yard. Make sure all fences have been secured. Take the time to get your pet microchipped and always have them wear a collar with a tag. It’s not a bad idea to find a calm, quiet spot in the house for them to remain in during the festivities.

4. Secure Crates in Truck Beds

The American Humane Society estimates 100,000 dogs are killed each year riding in a truck bed. While it is not illegal to transport a dog in a truck bed in Texas, some cities have ordinances against a dog roaming in the truck’s bed. Illegal or not, it is unsafe for a dog to be loose, subjected to all the stops, starts, and turns on the road. The safest way to transport a dog is to place them in a crate and secure the crate in the truck bed. This will protect them from weather elements as well as road debris.

5. Fence Gardens

One threat to your outdoor cat or small dog is the coyote, ubiquitous in parts of Texas. Coyotes are scavengers looking for a quick, easy meal as they roam the countryside. Broken fences and open garbage cans are like a siren song to the wiliest of predators. Leaving out the dog or cat food will also entice coyotes onto your property. Build a fence around gardens and pick up fruit that has fallen from trees.

5 Notable Pet Rescue Animal Shelters in Texas

1. Operation Kindness in Carrollton, TX

A one-of-a-kind outfit located in Carrollton, Operation Kindness has been helping homeless pets since 1976. In addition to the adoption program, they also have a full-service animal hospital and pet food pantry. Operation Kindness works with 41 other shelters and rescue groups in north Texas to take in their animals out of room- a true community partner.

2. Texas Best Choices Animal Rescue in Quinlan, TX

Sprawling across 22 acres, Texas Best Choices Animal Rescue is a haven for dogs and puppies that are homeless in the Quinlan/Hunt County area. Like many rescue organizations, they receive no government funding and rely on donations and adoption fees to care for 125 dogs a day on average.

3. Purr Paws Rescue in Cypress, TX

Devoted solely to cats, Purr Paws Rescue is not run out of a shelter but through foster homes. Through the help of volunteers, they are able to provide loving temporary homes to kittens and cats waiting for adoption.

4. Converse Animal Shelter Inc in Converse, TX

The Converse Animal Shelter (Casi) began as one of the first no-kill shelters in the San Antonio area. They have been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming pets since 1982. Casi advocates for the humane treatment of animals by educating the community through events.

5. Special Pals Rescue Resource Center in Houston, TX

Special Pals has been helping pets in the Houston community for many years. Not only do they offer adoptions but the shelter also houses a low-cost clinic. Special Pals works with local rescue groups to provide temporary boarding at their facility for dogs who are waiting for foster homes or transport.

Conclusion

Once you find that special dog, or already have a precious cat of your own, taking care of them is essential. Getting a pet insurance plan is another way to ensure they receive the care they need but keep the costs economical for you. Start a policy early in their life when there are fewer medical concerns and fewer pre-existing conditions to work around. An insurance plan for your pet at any age will give you peace of mind that any illness or injury won’t be an issue for you and your fur family member. After extensive research, my suggestion for pet parents in The Lone Star State would be Lemonade. They provide the best mix of price and coverage.
